The green bezel Submariner Date was introduced in 2003, the 50th anniversary of the Submariner.
At first, the predominant view was that as a commemorative model, it would soon drop from the catalog, but contrary to expectations, two generations of successors have followed.
This model has generated a lot of buzz, not only for the bezel, but also for the dial, hands, and other minor updates from the 16610, as well as the Big Swiss Flat Four, which can only be found on the earliest units.
